4/18/25
We hope you all are having a nice start to the Easter/Passover weekend and enjoying the weather. Thank you to everyone who applied or recommended someone else to apply to Thorp for next year. All initial offers have been sent out via email and need to be accepted by May 2nd. If your child will not be returning to Thorp next year (not including our current eighth graders), please fill out this form so that we may facilitate more seats for waitlisted families.
Communications
Thank you to the parents and teachers who have volunteered for the LSC Communication Committee this year. Your efforts have helped us make better connections between home and school. We are returning to scheduled appointment sessions if you need to speak to your child’s teacher, please email them or let us know at [email protected]. Thank you to those parents who dropped in to speak with us at our virtual team meetings over the last three months.
Special Olympics Pep Rally – This Friday (4/25)!
We’re excited to celebrate our incredible athletes at the Special Olympics Pep Rally this Friday! Please take a few moments this week to review expectations with your students so everyone can enjoy a positive and respectful event.
Expectations:
- Remain in your seats—no jumping up during the event
- Please pay attention—there’s a lot of great stuff to share!
- Do not scream—we are a noise-sensitive environment.
- Celebrate respectfully: clap by shaking your hands in the air, snapping, or waving your ribbon.
- Teachers, your active monitoring will go a long way in supporting a successful experience for all.
Thank you in advance for helping to make this a meaningful and memorable celebration for our Special Olympians. Your care and energy make all the difference—we can’t wait to cheer together (quietly)!
Resources:
Water Fountains
Some families have reached out with questions regarding the water fountains. Due to the age of the building, repairs are needed from time to time. After these repairs, there may be some minimal sediment and discoloration due to our iron pipes. However, this is not a health risk and we continually have our water tested as part of our district’s safety protocols. For more information, please click here. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].
7th Grade Activities
It has been a busy month for our seventh graders between the Women’s Celebration event, their trips to DC, and Navy Pier. A very special thank you to all of our staff and parent chaperones! Here are some highlights:
Funstitute!
Please join us for Thorp Funstitute!
Our Funstitute Camp will include Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics for students in grades 1 to 8 (incoming). Students will work on academics in the morning and camp-style activities in the afternoon.
Our hours will be from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Wednesdays will be our field trip days. Our dates for Funstitue will be July 7th to July 25th.
We have planned 3 weeks of fun-filled, interactive activities. The cost will be $100 per child and includes a t-shirt and all field trips. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. Children not attending Thorp in the fall are ineligible for Funstitute. Please register here.
All incoming kindergarteners will be eligible for our Kick-Off to Kindergarten, but dates and times have not been finalized by CPS. More information will be going home soon.
Friends of Thorp Dine-Out
Friends of Thorp will be hosting a week-long (!!) dine out at Jet's Pizza from April 13 - 19th. Any order using the code THORP will result in 20% back to our school! The Jet's Pizza at 5255 N Milwaukee Ave and 3951 N Kimball will both be participating.
Please volunteer for Spring Clean Up at Thorp on Saturday, May 3rd. More information is linked here.
Traffic Concerns
Parents, we ask for your cooperation. We are still without a crossing guard at Austin and Grace. If you know someone who may want a part-time job with benefits, please let us know at [email protected]. There are several traffic concerns that I would like to bring to your attention. Please DO NOT block the crosswalks; it is very dangerous for our students. Also, please do not park on the streets adjacent to the school for morning drop-off. Our routine is to stop, stay in the car, and let your child exit. If you know that your child will require additional assistance, please park in the neighborhood around the school and walk with them to the school. Finally, avoid Warwick for both dismissal and drop-off. The buses need to be able to drop off and pick up our students with mobility needs. Thank you again for your cooperation.
May you have a wonderful holiday weekend.
