Dynamically Different

Dear Parents,

Please try to read this letter with your child.

Hi I'm Mr. Toledo and I want to welcome you to the new school year!  I am really looking forward to seeing you on the first day of school - Monday, August 26th at 7:30 AM.

Our theme this year will be:

Dynamically Different

Each of our students is unique and we will focus on differentiating instruction to meet their academic and social-emotional learning needs.  We are committed to providing our students with differentiated, challenging, and supportive learning experiences that will make this year Dynamically Different!

As the school year starts we want to welcome our new Assistant Principal, Ms. Natalie Schoonewolff. She will be joining Ms. McNally, Ms. Limanni and Ms. Murrell in the office. Read Ms. Schoonewolff's welcome message here. In the next few days, we'll introduce you to other staff members who will be joining us at Thorp this year.

Summer Vacation:
Thorp Summer was filled with fun and learning. Thank you to all staff and students who participated.

As a family - we visited the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico and we had a wonderful time seeing Mayan ruins as well as beautiful underwater springs known as cenotes. Here are some pictures from our visit to the Xcaret Nature Park.

If your family had an interesting vacation - I would love to hear about it! Please let me know when I visit your classrooms during the first week of school. Or you can just practice using your email account and email me at [email protected].

First Day of School:
School begins at 7:30AM on August 26th. On that first day, we ask Kindergarten students to arrive at 8:30AM. This will allow parents to accompany their children on the first day of school and to take many pictures on our school grounds. Our auditorium is being renovated so Kindergarten parents, we will send out another email letting you know where we will meet on our school grounds for the first day of school.

All parents are encouraged to share their first-day photos on Twitter with the #ThorpFirstDay2024 hashtag. We will post these pictures on our website throughout the day.

Entry Procedures:
If you are dropping your child off please plan on letting them enter through the main doors on the West Field (Meade Ave.) and the East Playground (Grace Ave.). We encourage parents to find nearby parking in the neighborhood and walk their children to the school grounds. There will be assistance provided at the main entrances and throughout the halls to help direct everyone to their new classrooms.

Students in 7th and 8th grade will meet outside on the East playground. 5th and 6th grade students will sit in the balcony of the auditorium. Students in 1st to 4th grade will enter the building and line up in the hallway outside of their classroom. New students to Thorp will meet on the main floor of the auditorium. We have some helpful information linked on our First Day Logistics Presentation

Please avoid Warwick Ave. for drop-off. Warwick Ave. is closed to all traffic except for buses and students with disabilities during school entry (7:00-7:30 AM) and dismissal (2:30-2:45 PM).

Homerooms:
Homerooms and class assignments were put on ASPEN and should be visible on Parent Portal. There may still be some limited changes as we are still enrolling new families. If you do not know your child's homeroom or have not signed up for Parent Portal please click this link or visit our Parent University web page. If you cannot log in to Parent Portal please fill out this form.

Transportation:
For those families who rely on transportation services for your child(ren), please do not call the school.  We still have a shortage of bus drivers and this may affect busing for the school year. More information may be found here

Thorp After Care:
Our paid Thorp After-care program will begin during the first week of school. We also hope to offer free after-school clubs from 2:30 - 3:30 by the first week of October. More information will soon follow.

Thank you for reading my letter. I hope you are as excited as we are for the school year to start!

See you on Monday 8/26/2024!
