Tuesday Letter: 02/26/2013

Dear Parents,

This is an early version of the Friday Letter. I’d like to remind everyone that our students in grades 3-8 will be taking their ISAT tests from Monday 3/4 to Thursday 3/14. We have restructured our testing schedule so that our students will only be taking one test per day. This will minimize the amount of disruption and time that is actually taken away from instruction each day.

The ISAT test, as you have heard, will incorporate elements of the new Common Core State Standards and will therefore be a bit more difficult than in the past. I have mentioned this before, but just in case you have questions you may want to read the Sun Times article at: Statewide, we are expecting about a 20% drop in the number of students meeting or exceeding standards. For example, Thorp is typically over 92% M/E for Reading and Math, based on the new cut scores our M/E percentage will likely be in the 70’s. This does not mean that our level of instruction has diminished – it just means that the skills the ISAT test will be focusing on will be different. Parents, we will have our second assessment informational meeting on Wednesday the 27th at 6:00PM.  In order to reduce any test anxiety (on behalf of our parents) we will have our violinists playing as a warm-up prior to the meeting starting at 5:45PM. I would encourage you to come and listen to the music – even if you don’t have questions about standardized testing.

Parents, on behalf of the Gomez family, I would also like to thank you for your support in our Be the Match – Bone Marrow screening drive. Thank you as well to all of our volunteers who helped during the drive.

Remember that tomorrow, February 27th students will have a half-day. Dismissal will occur at 11;15AM. Cold –cut sandwiches will be served for lunch, so you may want to make your own arrangements.

Finally, Taste of Thorp is this Friday March 1st, from 7 -10pm at Biagio’s.  Tickets are selling out fast – If you have not done so, please purchase your tickets by visiting the Friends of Thorp website: .  The class with the most tickets sold will receive a Pizza Party from Friends of Thorp.  I am looking forward to seeing you there.

Thank you,

Efren Toledo
