Dear Thorp Community,
It is with great enthusiasm that I introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal of O.A. Thorp Scholastic Academy. I’m excited to work with all of you to build on Thorp’s many strengths and push Thorp to new heights.
I attended Kenyon College in Ohio where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. After graduating, I received the US Department of State’s Fulbright Teaching Fellowship in Berlin, Germany where I taught English as a Second Language to students in kindergarten through sixth grade. My time in Berlin led me to pursue a career in education.
When I returned to the US, I attended Northwestern University and received a Masters in Elementary Education and Social Policy. I’m also endorsed to teach English as a Second Language. As a classroom teacher, I taught kindergarten and first grade on the South and Northwest sides of Chicago.
To continue my professional growth, I’m currently enrolled in The University of Illinois at Chicago’s Urban Education Leadership EdD program. Most recently, I was the Instructional Coach and Case Manager at Audubon Elementary in Roscoe Village. In this role, I supported PreK-8 and Diverse Learner teachers, engaging them in data analysis and coaching. I also improved school-wide MTSS implementation through tracking student achievement data and collaborating with teachers to ensure all students received the support necessary to succeed.
Outside of school, I like to travel, garden, and explore Chicago by foot and by bike. I’m an avid runner; most mornings you can find me running on the Lakefront Trail. I also support the non-profit program Girls on the Run and am a former GOTR coach.
Again, I am delighted to join Thorp’s community and look forward to partnering with all of Thorp’s stakeholders. I hope to connect with many of you soon; please don’t hesitate to reach out!
Very sincerely,
Elaine McFarlane
