I am Mrs. Santos, first grade teacher in Room 109. Welcome students and parents to another exciting school year! I have been teaching at OA Thorp for over 16 years. Ever since I was a child, I played school and had a great interest in becoming a teacher. After starting my education program at UIC, I knew I wanted to work with second language learners. Spanish is my first language, and even though I struggled in my primary grade years, knowing 2 languages opened up many opportunities for me in the education field. I was hired at Thorp School as the ESL/Bilingual coordinator, and for 7 years I greatly enjoyed working with the ESL students providing small group instruction. I transitioned into the classroom and taught 1 year in fourth grade. From then on, I have been teaching first grade for the past 9 years. I am the mother of 3 adorable and active children with 1 more baby due in November. My children are Eryen, Cyrus, Elyana, and soon to be-baby Annalise. They are learning 3 languages: English, Spanish, and Tagalog. My husband and I enjoy taking road trip adventures with our kids and visiting different children’s museums. This summer we spent family time in the pool, bouncy house, and enjoyed watching movies in our backyard. Although this year will be much different, my students will continue to be enthusiastic about learning. I love working with this age group because first graders are unique individuals full of curiosity and knowledge!
