Chicago Public School Department of Libraries and Information and the American Association of School Librarians has reviewed the grading procedure for Library Media Centers (LMCs). The mission of the Library Program is to develop effective and efficient users of ideas and information and to foster a life-long love of reading. Assigning library letter grades is not considered “best practice.”
Thorp has adopted this updated philosophy. Library assignments are designed and differentiated so that every student can be successful. Weekly grades and report cards for students in first through fifth grade will now reflect this success as a “P” indicating “pass” or an “F” indicating “fail.”
Best practice also suggests a flexible or partly flexible library schedule where students and teachers can visit the library at the point of need for books, information or collaboratively taught lessons. Our 6th – 8th grade students will visit the LMC as a class with their teacher to facilitate research or in small groups (2 – 3) when they need books or information. Sixth, seventh and eighth graders will not receive grades for Library.
