UPDATE 9/17/2012: It seems that school will be closed on Tuesday 9/18/2012. Please continue to watch the news for further developments. CPS has provided students with excellent online resources. Please visit http://www.cps.edu/ChildrenFirst/Pages/ChildrenFirstEducationalResources.aspx for online activities your child may work on while not attending school.
UPDATE 9/16/2012: Thorp will be closed on Monday as CTU reviews the latest contract proposal from CPS. In light of this event we will postpone Open House until next week 9/26 (Grades 1-4) & 9/27 (Grades 5-8). Please keep watching the news for any new developments.
Dear Parents and Students:
Although we will not know until Sunday, it looks like CTU and CPS are close to reaching an agreement and I truly hope we can have all students and teachers back to school on Monday. We have a number of important events coming up next week; contingent on school being open.
MAP Testing: Monday, 9/17 will be our first day of full school MAP Testing. The MAP test is a self-adapting computer based test that narrows in on a student’s learning level based on their answers to questions in Reading and Math. This will allow our teachers to tailor instruction based on your child’s instructional level. More information will be available online at: http://www.nwea.org/sites/www.nwea.org/files/resources/ParentToolkit.pdf as well as during our Open House. We will be testing grades K-8 during the rest of September.
Monthly Coffee and Tea Time with Mr. Toledo: Monday, 9/17 (directly following the scheduled PTA meeting)– A brief time to discuss what is happening at Thorp as well as opportunities for you to get involved as a Thorp Parent.
Open House: Meet your child’s teacher and learn about all of the innovative instruction at Thorp Academy by visiting our Open House from 7:00PM – 8:00PM on Wednesday, September 19th (for Grades 1-4) and Thursday September 20th (for Grades 5-8).
The Thorp Paint-a-Thon: On Saturday, 9/22 Huron Consulting Group has volunteered again this year to help us spruce up our school by painting our wrought –iron fence, our playground, and our student bathrooms. You can help too! Help beautify Thorp by volunteering online and clicking here.
A few other items worth mentioning: For those students and parents wondering about Picture Day – It has been rescheduled for October 1st. Parents, the new lunch system seems to be working well; you should be receiving Account Balance Statements on Monday. Please inform us if there are any discrepancies. Also Mrs. Rigas, our lunchroom manager has informed me that student lunches are $2.35 for paid students (or $11.75 /week). Please make sure to label the envelope with your child’s lunch money with their name, their homeroom and the amount on the outside.
I hope to see you at each of our events during this very busy week. Although I expect there to be an agreement in place between CTU and CPS, please watch the news for any late breaking events.
Thank you for your unwavering support of Thorp Academy,
Efren D. Toledo
