Friday Letter: 2.6.15

February 6, 2015

Dear Parents,

Parents, I want to thank you for your patience during this bout of inclement weather. Some parents have asked me why we closed off Grace St. this week. This year, we have had three illegally parked cars hit by our school buses (the most recent one being last week); additionally the unsafe conditions created by the snow have forced me to close the street until all buses have departed. Please be sure that Grace will be open as soon as the buses leave – at approximately 3:00 p.m. Thank you for your understanding. Please remember that illegally parked cars will be ticketed or towed.

Next week is School Spirit Week:

Monday 2/9/15 – Marvelous dress-up Monday – dress as your favorite super-hero, cartoon character, etc (no masks)
Tuesday 2/10/15 – Wacky Tacky Tuesday and/or Hat Day
Wednesday 2/11/15 – Pajama Day
Thursday 2/12/15 – Twin Day
Friday 2/13/15 – Fancy Schmancy Friday – dress in your finest outfits (and snow boots if appropriate).

There will be a school dance from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. for 5th & 6th grades and 12:30 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. for 7th & 8th grades on February 13th. Cost is $1.00 or a canned food item. The Class of 2015 will also be raffling a 5lb. Hershey Bar during Spirit week. Raffle tickets will be fifty cents each.

Due to the changes in the CPS calendar, report card distribution will be on February 10th. Graduation date for eighth grade students will remain June 12th. We will one again need to reschedule our first semester Awards Assembly to Thursday, February 19th. The K-5 Assembly will be at 8:30 a.m. and the 6-8 Assembly will occur at approximately 10:00 a.m. There will no school on Monday, February 16th, in honor of Presidents’ Day.

Our school nurse has identified the small number of students at Thorp who have not received their full measles inoculation. We will be contacting these families proactively. CPS has not instituted a policy yet, but I expect a policy update soon.

Friends of Thorp:
The next Friends of Thorp meeting will be Wednesday, February 11th at 6:30 p.m. at Katie Madden’s house 6119 Dakin St. We will be discussing preparations and needs for Taste of Thorp.
