Dear Parents,

PARCC Assessments: Parents, there are a number of you who are asking if we will be participating in the PARCC Assessment this year. The short answer is: We do not know yet. CPS and the State of Illinois have been in discussions about how many schools need to take PARCC this year. At Thorp, we are preparing to participate, just in case we are told that we have to test. In the event that PARCC is administered at Thorp, the test will occur in two rounds. The first round of PARCC assessments will be March 10, 11, and 12 and will test both Reading and Math. Students in grades 3 to 5 will be given a paper-based assessment, while grades 6 to 8 will be given a computer-based assessment. Grades K to 2 will not be tested. The second round of PARCC testing will occur in May. To learn more about PARCC, please visit More information about our testing procedures will be forthcoming, once a final determination has been made by CPS.

Saturday School for selected 8th grade students will begin tomorrow, Saturday, February 28th from 7:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. This program is mandatory for all potential non-graduates. After School All Stars (ASAS) will have all academic classes, coding, and media sessions run until April 3rd.

Parents, thank you for attending our First Semester Awards Assembly. It was a student celebration filled with music and fun; and I think we all had a great time. If we inadvertently omitted your child’s name from any of the lists, please let us know and we will recognize them on Monday, during our morning announcements. We thank you for supporting your child and also for attending yesterday’s event. Pictures of the assembly will be online.

Traffic around school: Parents, at Thorp we have 15 school buses that transport nearly half of our students each day. This year, we have seen significant improvements in both arrival and dismissal traffic. However, if there is a significant snowfall – expect longer than usual street closures on Warwick and Grace. I understand that this may create an inconvenience, but the safe arrival and dismissal of our students is our top priority. Your understanding is truly appreciated.

Friends of Thorp:
Do you know someone who is a caterer or a restaurant manager? Do you have a restaurant in the neighborhood you frequent regularly? Friends of Thorp is looking for help in garnering a wide variety of food options for Taste of Thorp, our biggest fundraiser of the year. Dropping off a donation form and our tax exempt status letter with the appropriate person is all it usually takes to help! All of the letters and forms can be found at or you can contact Janelle Reilly, Taste of Thorp Food Committee Chair at with questions or suggestions. We are also still looking for donations for the silent and live auction portions, including but not limited to vacation house/hotel stays, airline tickets, sports or theater tickets, and other unique experiences. Deadline for donation items is March 27, 2015. Thanks for your support! See you April 24 at Biagio!!
