Our Saturday School will begin tomorrow, Saturday October 5th, from 7:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. This will be an opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students to receive additional academic support to prepare them for high school. Forms were distributed last week to the students. No student will be allowed to attend Saturday School unless they have returned their signed form to the school.
The Thorp afterschool program will begin next week. This will include club-based programs, as well as academic support opportunities for select students in grades three to five. Please view the forms sent home on our website by searching for “after school programs”.
We have distributed Individualized Learning Paths (ILP) for each student. You can use this learning tool to help support your child with her/his academic learning needs. We will hold an informational meeting for parents about using the ILP in early November, before MAP testing.
The Scholastic Book Fair’s Reading Oasis will be October 7th – October 11th. Family Night at the Book Fair will be on October 8th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Online Book Fair will be from October 2nd to October 22nd. We hope that you will come to the O.A. Thorp Fall Fest on Saturday, October 12th and buy your fall pumpkins and mums (supplied by Farmer’s Market Garden Center) to decorate your home and support Thorp at the same time. Thank you Friends of Thorp for organizing such a fantastic event and providing more opportunities to support our school. Our 8th graders will be there as well as the PTA selling candy apples and more!
The next PTA meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 17th at 6:00 p.m. We hope that you can make it.
Our 8th Grade Graduation Committee will be holding its next meeting on Monday, October 7th at 6:00 pm. at the Irving-Austin Library.
Picture Retake Day is scheduled for Friday, October 11th.
Our Learning Garden Planting Day is set for Thursday, October 10th. Everyone working in the garden on the Planting Day will be getting their hands in the soil and should come dressed appropriately to be working outside in the garden. Students should wear closed toe shoes and shirts and long pants they won’t mind getting a little dirty.
Science Fair development is going on now for students in grades sixth through eighth. In order to support both our students and their parents, Thorp School has put a number of helpful resources on our website. Please don’t forget about the 10th Annual O.A. Thorp Scholastic Academy Night with the Chicago Wolves. The game is Saturday, October 26 at 7pm and tickets are only $13.50! So make sure you turn your orders in by Friday, October 11th and join the fun. As an added bonus, for each ticket purchased you will receive a Chicago Wolves hat!
Our Thorp High School Fair for 7th and 8th grade families will be on Friday, October 18th from 8:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
Finally, Monday, October 14th is Columbus Day. There will be no school on this day.
