Friday Letter 10.25.2013

October 25, 2013

Dear Parents,

Autumn is upon us and with the falling leaves we also have falling temperatures. Please ensure that your children are dressed appropriately for the colder weather; this is particularly important when they go outside for recess. The academic quarter for CPS will end on Thursday, October 31st. Parents, please check Parent Portal so we do not have any surprises on Report Card Pick-up Day – November 12th.  As I mentioned previously, we do not allow our students to wear costumes for Halloween, but students are encouraged to wear fall colors on this day. I look forward to seeing a deluge of orange, brown, black and yellow throughout the building on October 31st.

The next scheduled Local School Council (LSC) meeting will be on Wednesday, November 6th at 6:15 p.m. Family Volunteer Day will be on Saturday, November 9th, starting at 9:00 a.m. Thorp School will also have Huron Consulting come to volunteer to help paint the school fence. We hope that you can make it.

There will be no school on Friday, November 1st, which will work out well for trick-or-treaters. Teachers – you still have school (regardless if you trick or treat); this is a School Improvement Day for faculty and staff.

Some parents have asked for a breakdown of the $55.00 Student Fee. Below is a quick average of our costs:

Classroom Materials and supplies $10.00
Average Student Field Trips (bus and admission costs) $26.00
Gym Shirt $ 5.00
Classroom Subscriptions $ 8.00
Student Agendas $ 5.00
Student ID w/Lanyard $ 6.00

Our costs are not covered by the $55.00, but I feel that this a reasonable amount to ask and it centralizes our money collection procedures through the office rather than in the classrooms. I understand that this fee can be difficult to pay for some of our families. If you would like to pay the fee in partial payments, please feel free to do so either by money order or through our website.  If you cannot pay the fee or need to discuss payment arrangements, please feel free to call me.  There will be Saturday School for 7th & 8th graders this Saturday from 7:30A.M. to 8:45A.M.

Thank you.
