Friday Letter: 09.12.14

Dear Parents,

Thank you for joining us at Open House; we hope you had a chance to meet and speak with your child’s teacher. I am excited about the learning and instruction evident throughout our school building. My presentation, as well as the 8th grade presentation is available on the Thorp website.

 

Parents, in order to ensure the safety of all families, we have instituted a number of changes in our drop-off and dismissal procedures. The teacher parking lot no longer has direct access to the playground. Please do not walk through the parking lot to drop off or pick up your child.  In the morning, our 8th grade volunteers will be helping students walk from their cars into the auditorium. These volunteers will be easily identifiable as you drop off your children on Grace Ave. Also, we are asking all families that cross Austin Ave. to walk to the intersection of Austin and Grace where our crossing guard is stationed. This may be an inconvenience, but it helps ensure the safety of our students. Please make appropriate walking, parking, and drop-off plans with your child.

 

Parents we know that sometimes you may need to drop your child off early, we offer an early-morning drop off service for a daily fee of $5.00 in the auditorium from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.. The YMCA program also offers an after-school program daily from 2:45 to 6:30 p.m. For more information please visit our website and search “YMCA”.

 

Strong parental involvement is one of the hallmarks of the Thorp educational experience, and we look forward to providing you with opportunities to serve. The Thorp PTA will hold its organizational meeting on Thursday, September 18th at 6:00 p.m. in the the auditorium. During this meeting, we will be looking for candidates to run for the open officer positions on the PTA executive committee.  The next scheduled Friends of Thorp meeting will be on September 17th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Also, the Friends of Thorp will be hosting a Pub Quiz. Show off your trivia knowledge and have fun at this parent-only event at Galvin’s Public House (5901 W Lawrence Ave) on Sunday, September 21st, from 4-6 p.m. Check-in is at 3:30 p.m. The cost for Pub Quiz tickets are: $20.00/person (in advance); $35.00/couple (in advance); and $25.00/person (at the door). The cost includes entrance fee, light appetizers and one 50/50 Raffle ticket. Additional 50/50 Raffle tickets can be purchased at the event for $5 each, or 5 for $20. Today was the due date for submitting the CPS (Lunch) Fee Waiver Form 2014 – 2015 application. Thorp receives funding based on the number of forms turned in. Each family must turn in a form, even if it is labeled “N/A”. The Student Fee of $55.00 is payable on our school website. The breakdown of our student fee is on our school website. Parents we prefer you to pay it on-line but if this is an inconvenience please send a money order with your child’s name and homeroom. If you would like to set up a payment plan for the student fee please call the office.

The Medical Compliance due date is October 15, 2014. If your child has entered kindergarten, is in sixth grade or recently transferred from a non-CPS school, please submit this information to our office staff as soon as possible. The school nurse will be sending out non-compliance letters next week.

 

On the back of this letter is the Thorp Academic Planning Calendar. It provides you with important dates, holidays, and more; as always dates may change.

This letter will be delivered to your email every Friday. In the future we will be phasing out our paper printing of the Friday Letter.
