September 5, 2014
I would like to welcome you back to a new school year. I am very excited about this year and all of the great things that are going on at Thorp Scholastic Academy. We have a beautiful new playground on the east side of the school. Thank you to all Thorp students, parents, community members and Snapple/Dr. Pepper (Kaboom!) who came out on August 9th to help make this dream a reality!
There are a few items that I would like to discuss this week. First, our Open House for this year will be on Wednesday, September 10th for grades First through Third. The Open House for grades Fourth through Eighth will be on Thursday, September 11th. Both Open Houses will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There is a very important meeting for our eighth grade families concerning the high school application process. Please join us.
Parents, we are requesting that you update your emergency contact information for the new school year. Please remember to complete and highlight any changes to the pre-populated forms that were sent home. All forms should be returned with your child by Monday, September 8th.
The due date for submitting the CPS Fee Waiver Form 2014 – 2015 application is Friday, September 12th. Thorp receives funding based on the number of forms turned in. Each family must turn in a form, even if it is labeled “N/A”.
The Medical Compliance due date is October 15, 2014. If your child has entered kindergarten, is in sixth grade or recently transferred from a non-CPS school, please submit this information to our office staff as soon as possible. Students who are not in medical compliance will be excluded from attending school after October 15th.
Parents, in order to ensure the safety of all families, we have instituted a number of changes in our drop-off and dismissal procedures. The teacher parking lot no longer has direct access to the playground. Please do not walk through the parking lot to drop off or pick up your child. In the morning, our 8th grade volunteers will be helping walk students from their cars into the auditorium. These volunteers will be easily identifiable as you drop off your children on Grace Ave. Also, we are asking all families that cross Austin Ave. to walk to the intersection of Austin and Grace where our crossing guard is stationed. This may be an inconvenience, but in order to help ensure your child’s safety, we feel that it is necessary. Please make appropriate walking, parking, and drop-off plans. This will also facilitate traffic flow on Austin Avenue and help prevent impatient drivers from trying to skirt around you and your child while you are crossing the street.
Strong parental involvement is one of the hallmarks of the Thorp educational experience, and we are looking forward to providing you with opportunities to serve. The next Local School Council (LSC) meeting will be on Monday, September 8th at 6:15 p.m. The next scheduled Friends of Thorp meeting will be on September 17th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Also, the Thorp PTA will hold its organizational meeting on Thursday, September 18th at 6:00 p.m. in the the auditorium. During this meeting, we will be looking for candidates to run for the open officer positions on the PTA executive committee.
Finally, we will celebrate the beginning of our school year, as well as the opening of our new playground, with a “Back to School Play Date”. We are looking forward to seeing all parents and students this Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at our new playground. There will be a special Kindergarten Play date at 10:00 a.m.
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of playing a role in your child’s education.
