Due to the snowstorm expected this Saturday, February 1st, our Saturday Success School will be postponed for next Saturday, February 8th. There will not be any Saturday School or Saturday Detention this Saturday as well. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Saturday Success School will be for parents and students in grades 3 to 8 who have received an “F” or a “D” in Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading and/or Writing. These workshops will focus on how to best prepare your child for success in school. The workshops will cover: Organizational Skills, Goal Setting and Parent-Teacher Communication. These workshops will take the place of the required teacher conferences normally scheduled for failing students. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school 773.534.3640 or just check the Thorp Website.
Our First Semester Awards Assembly will be on February 20th. The Primary (K-2) Assembly will begin at 8:15, the Intermediate (3-5) Assembly will occur at 9:15 and the Upper (6-8) Assembly will occur at 10:15. All student receiving Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance and Achieving the MAP Goals will be recognized. Parents are welcome to come.
The next scheduled PTA meeting will also be on Thursday, February 20th at 6:00 p.m. The Thorp PTA will also host a DINE-OUT FUNDRAISER on Thursday, February 6th at Central Kitchen and Tap, 4800 N. Central Ave. to raise money for Thorp School. Central Kitchen and Tap will donate 15% of the net purchases made by Thorp families on that day back to the school! Please make sure to mention that you are a Thorp Family.
Friends of Thorp are looking for volunteers for their Annual Fundraiser “Taste of Thorp”. This event includes Dinner and Auctions (silent & live). When: Friday, February 28, 2014, 7:00 p.m. Where: Biagio! 4242 North Central Ave. Friends of Thorp are raising funds to improve Thorp’s campus with a much needed playground. Proceeds from Taste of Thorp will support this exciting endeavor! Friends of Thorp are also continuing their Bricks for Play fundraiser. Please visit their website at http://www.friendsofthorp.org/ for additional information.
Due to the unusually cold weather, please be aware that designated route buses might arrive a few minutes later than usual regarding the pickup and drop-off of students. Please be patient during this weather season. No student will be marked tardy if their designated school bus is late bringing them to school. With the colder weather, we encourage all the children to go home once they are dismissed. Students have been told that if their parents are not outside during dismissal, they are to report to the office. Students are not allowed to throw snowballs at each other – parents if you would like your children to play in the snow – Merrimac Park is only a few blocks away.
Parents, I would also appreciate it if you would use the sidewalks, instead of cutting through the teacher’s parking lot to pick up your child. Any child who uses the teacher’s parking lot will receive a detention. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.
