Start of School Questions

Just a short note to answer some Frequently Asked Questions:

School starting time:  7:30 AM (Students may enter the building at 7:00 AM)

School ending time: 2:30 p.m.

New Students: All students who are new to Thorp except for kindergartners  will line up outside on the East (Grades: K-5) play lot, or on the West (Grades 6-8) play lot. Be on the lookout for faculty holding “NEW STUDENTS” signs if you have questions. Kindergarten students will be seated in the auditorium with their parents.

First day of school:  September 4, 2012 – full day – please send lunch money for the week or have your child bring their own bag lunch. Kindergartners may also want to bring a snack, but please ask your child’s teacher at orientation on August 30th for appropriate snack choices.

Attendance: Whenever a child is absent, it is imperative that the parent call the Thorp Absence Line at 534-3640 and press #2 by 8:00 a.m.  This is a 24 hour number. When your child returns, he/she must have a signed note from the parent which states a specific reason for the absence.

Bus Routes: Bus routes will start the first day of school. You will be informed during the summer of your bus route and designated stop. We ask that you be patient with the bus service during the first two weeks of the school year. The bus could possibly be late during this time, until the routes have been clarified. The students will not be marked tardy if the bus is late. Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated.

Hot Lunch Program: Lunch and breakfast are provided daily at no cost to students. Free and reduced meal applications will be sent home with your student. Please fill them out completely and return them as soon as possible. You will be notified via your student about their status. If you have any questions regarding the free/reduced lunch program, please call the office.

Lunch/Recess: Students will be given a 45 minute lunch/recess period every day. Recess schedules will vary by grade level.

Medical/Dental Forms: If you have not turned in your completed Medical/Dental forms when you registered, please have them in the school office by the second week of September. If this is not possible, please inform the office to make other arrangements.

Parking: Parking is available on the side streets near the school. Please do not park on the school side of Warwick Avenue, as this is our bus loading zone. For the safety of our students, we ask that you do not double park on any street, nor have your student cross the street between buses. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Uniforms: We do not have a uniform policy; but we do have a Dress Code. We ask that students dress for school appropriately (e.g. no midriffs, no spaghetti strap tops, no short shorts, or flip-flop type shoes). Students will wear Gym Uniforms for Gym class. Our PTA will be happy to assist you with purchasing the Gym Wear (http://thorpoaelemscholasticacad.my-pta.org/content.asp?PageID=4).
