Friday Letter 9.25.2015

September 25, 2015

Dear Parents,

I want to begin by thanking you for your patience and understanding regarding the new bus pick-up times and locations that some of your children have had to adjust to. Busing issues seem to have been worked out and are now operating pretty smoothly for those who families who put in their applications prior to the start of the school year. We also would like to remind parents not to pull into the teachers parking lot to drop-off or pick-up their children.

We sent home the CPS Family Income Information Forms and we really NEED families to complete this form and return it to school as soon as possible as it is tied to our school funding.  Without these forms Thorp may lose out on significant funding that the school counts on. One form per family is all that is required. If you feel this does not apply to you based on income, please still fill it out and put N/A in part 4 of the form. If you need a form please contact the office and we will be glad to provide an additional form.

Kindergarten parents, today we sent home authorization forms from the CPS Vision Program.  This program provides free vision exams and glasses at NO COST.  In order to participate please fill out and sign the Consent, Release of Liability, and Authorization Form, and Student Medical History Form.  If interested, please return to your child’s teacher as soon as possible.

PTA
PTA will be sponsoring two events in the near future and they are looking for parent volunteers. They need help on Friday, October 2nd to set up for the Scholastic Book Fair.  The book fair will run during the week of October 5th-9th during the school day for students and during Family Night on Wednesday, October 7th from 6-7:30 for families. Fliers will go home next week.  If you are able to volunteer for the set up or during Family Night please email the PTA at oathorppta@gmail.com.  Additionally, the PTA has a wellness goal and mission this year to create a “Healthy Parent- Healthy Child” focus engaging‎ parents and children to adopt healthier choices through an active lifestyle and focus on smart eating choices. Please join them for their first Wednesday Walking ‎Club next week Wednesday,  September 28th near the garden at 7:45 am. They will walk for 30 minutes and discuss upcoming Garden Walk Club and Walk Wednesdays.  If you have any questions contact Colleen Lammel-Harmon at Thorpwellness@yahoo.com. The next PTA meeting will be held on Friday, October 23rd right after student drop-off.

Lost and found. Parents if your child has lost an article of clothing please check our lost and found storage area outside of the cafeteria. A stroller was found outside of school.  If you happen to have left your stroller please contact the office for more information. Additionally, we know that many families are taking advantage of our wonderful playground.  However, for safety and security reasons we cannot permit families to enter the school building after school hours to get water or use the bathroom.

Some of our fee-based after school programs have started or will soon be starting including the YMCA after-school program, Discovery Language, Windy City Music Theatre program, Hovland School Music (email esther@hovlandconservatory.org), RobotCity, and Center for Gifted. We hope to have all programs up and running by Columbus Day Week (October 13th). Our list of school sponsored After-School All Stars will be shared on the school website. Financial assistance is available for ALL programs to students who qualify. Please do not let cost be an issue in your child’s participation.

As always, thank you for your trust in our efforts at Thorp Academy. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns.
