Friday Letter 8.30.2013

August 30, 2013

Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome you back to a new school year. I am very excited about this year and all of the great things that are going on at Thorp Academy.

There are a few items that I would like to discuss this week. First, our Open House for this year will be on Wednesday, September 11th for grades Kindergarten through Third. The Open House for grades Fourth through Eighth will be on Thursday, September 12th. Both Open Houses will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Parents, we are requesting that you update your emergency contact information for the new school year. Please remember to complete and return the Emergency Contact Information form sent home with your child by Tuesday, September 3rd.

The due date for submitting Free/Reduced Lunch Form applications is Friday, September 6th. Thorp receives supplemental funding based on our Free/Reduced Lunch Forms. It is imperative that we receive a form from each family. If you are not interested in applying for Free/Reduced Lunch, please write “Not Interested” on the form, and return it with your child by the deadline.
The Medical Compliance due date is October 15, 2013. If your child has entered kindergarten, is in sixth grade or recently transferred from a non-CPS school, please submit this information to our office staff as soon as possible. Students who are not in medical compliance will be excluded from attending school after October 15th.  Parents may submit an appointment from the doctor in order to meet the compliance deadline.
This is just part one of the Friday Letter. Part two of my letter answers some very important Frequently Asked Questions like: Is it true we have a Spanish class at Thorp?  Why is Thorp a peanut free school? How does my child get into the Comprehensive Gifted Program? How do I pay for school lunch?

The way to access part two of my letter is by submitting your email address at: http://tinyurl.com/thorpmail. By sharing your email with us you will help Thorp save thousands of dollars in copying costs. Additionally, electronic correspondence is good for the environment and it ensures that you receive everything we send home. Please take time to fill out the email form and allow us to share your information with our PTA and Friends of Thorp parent groups; this will allow them to save money as well. If you do not have internet access please call the office and we will continue sending home paper copies.

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of playing a role in your child’s education.

    1. The lunch menu button should now work. CPS changed lunch vendors and now there is a centralized link. (However, I cannot vouch for accuracy.)

  1. My son had follow check up to his specialist doctor ( for his asthma) before this doctor’s vacation. That was Tuesday, the 27th. He was only gone to school for 2 hours. When he went back I was told it is not excused anymore. How come? Is it true? Or do I need a letter from the doctor? I pity my son for having an asthma.

    1. The new CPS policy states that doctor’s appointments should be made after school hours. I am sorry for the inconvenience, our clerks are just following CPS guidelines.
