December 5, 2014
There WILL BE Saturday school for 7th and 8th grade students this Saturday, December 6th. Please note that after school non-academic programs end next week on December 12th.
The Chicago Public Schools has released its School Quality Rating Report (SQRP) for 2014. We are excited to announce that O.A.Thorp Scholastic Academy has a School Quality Rating of Level 1+. This is the highest designation that a school can earn. The SQRP Performance Indicators show that Thorp students did better than 97% of schools NATIONALLY for both reading growth and math growth, as measured by the Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP). As we have stated before, if we concentrate and diligently work on ensuring that student learning truly incorporates the 4C’s of Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity the test results will take care of themselves. Nevertheless, I do not want to minimize our accomplishment. In Chicago, Thorp ranked #1 in the O’hare Network (the highest achieving network system-wide) for combined growth and attainment in Math and Reading. We are very grateful to the students, teachers, parents, and community members who helped to make this possible. More information can be found at the CPS website at http://cps.edu/Schools/Find_a_school/Pages/findaschool.aspx.
The NWEA MAP test will be administered for all students in grades 6-8 the week of December 15th. Grades 2 – 5 will be tested the week of January 12th. At Thorp we opted out of the Fall testing session, but the winter test will help us better monitor progress for each child and make adjustments in instruction as needed. CPS measures student growth from spring to spring so the spring test in May will be the test of record when it comes to students meeting their growth targets, promotion criteria and selective enrollment.
As you know, without the appropriate technology it is very difficult for your child to be successful at Thorp. If you are thinking about presents for your children this holiday season – consider low-cost Chromebooks. Chromebooks are often less than $200; and your child can use them to complete homework, visit learning sites, and work on school projects. We use Chromebooks extensively at school as a low-cost alternative to laptops. If you have any questions please feel free to email me. If you do not have internet access, or lack a working computer – we are also working with a number of agencies to help our students acquire the technology necessary to be successful at school. Two sites for low-cost technology are: http://www.internetessentials.com/ and http://everyoneon.org.
