Friday Letter: 12.12.14

December 12, 2014

Dear Parents,

There WILL BE Saturday school for 7th and 8th grade students this Saturday, December 13th. Saturday School will not occur during the Winter Break and will resume on January 10th. Please note that our after school non-academic programs end today, December 12th. Progress reports will be sent home on December 19th.

Parents, I want to remind you once again that the NWEA MAP test will be administered for all students in grades 6-8 the week of December 15th. Grades 2-5 will be tested the week of January 12th. At Thorp, we opted out of the Fall testing session, but the winter test will help us monitor progress for each child and make adjustments in instruction as needed. CPS measures student growth from spring to spring. This makes the spring test in May, the benchmark when it comes to students meeting their growth targets, promotion criteria and selective enrollment. If you have not had a chance to see Thorp’s school progress report, more information can be found at: http://cps.edu/Schools/Find_a_school/Pages/findaschool.aspx.

This holiday season if your family is in need of winter clothes, or if you know of someone who might be – please call or email me. We will discretely handle all requests.

On December 18th – We will have a volunteer appreciation breakfast for our parent volunteers from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Feel free to drop in and partake in conversation and breakfast. As I have said many times – we are so thankful at Thorp for the world’s greatest parents and students!

December 19th will be our Annual Holiday Sing-a-long! The assemblies for K-4 will start at 8:15 a.m. and grades 5-8 will start at 9:00 a.m. Parents, please feel free to come by and join us in song and holiday fun. (Parents whose children will be performing on stage have been contacted by Mrs. McDaniel.)

Parents, I am asking for your help when you drop off students in the morning on Warwick Ave. We have many cars that are blocking traffic by pulling up to the school doors and stopping in the middle of the street. This stops the flow of traffic and creates an unsafe condition for the children getting out of their cars. Please pull up to the curb as far down on Warwick as possible. Remember, there are three entrances that the children can use in the morning: The doors facing Meade, Austin and Warwick are all accessible for students until 7:45 a.m. Congestion is considerably less on Meade and Grace.

Friends of Thorp:
The Friends of Thorp wish to thank you for a record breaking Holiday Extravaganza event! Thanks to our fantastic volunteers, donors and attendees, Friends of Thorp raised a record $3,260.65 at this year’s event! We GREATLY appreciate all the hard work done by Thorp families, students, friends and staff before, during and after the event. It was a lot of work, but definitely a lot of fun too.
PTA News and Information
Winter Germ Wipe Out! Let’s start 2015 completely refreshed! After school, the PTA and parent volunteers will be wiping out germs with disinfectant wipes before the holiday break by cleaning all door knobs, railings and common areas where students fingers may land on Thursday, December 18th. You can help in one or two ways: 1. Send in a container of disinfectant wipes with your child on or before Thursday, December 18th, or 2. Provide a little of your time and a lot of your elbow grease! Please sign up on Volunteeerspot, using the link: http://vols.pt/FZZTMK. The next PTA Meeting will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 8 a.m. in the large lunchroom. Please join us to hear about our events for 2015! Also, keep an eye out for PTA sponsored Health and Wellness Assemblies coming in 2015!

Please fill out a short survey about my performance as your child’s principal. Your feedback is important to our LSC as well as to me personally. The survey will remain open until Dec. 19th http://tinyurl.com/principalsurvey2015.

Sincerely,

Efren Toledo – Principal
