December 6, 2013

Dear Parents,

Our MAP/NWEA testing session for the winter is still in progress. Please make sure your child is well rested. MAP/NWEA Testing results will be sent home before break. A big THANK YOU to the parents who came out for the Parent Information Night on Thorp Active Learning and MAP/NWEA Testing. If you were not able to attend, please click the following link (http://tiny.cc/ParentInfo12052013) to see the presentation.

CPS vision and hearing clinicians have completed testing. If your child brought a form home recommending glasses, please complete the form, sign and return it to school. The Ageless ICARE program will come to Thorp School, exam your child and fit them for glasses. We are going to set up a date as soon as all forms are returned to school. If you have lost your child’s form and are interested in having your child examined, please come to the office for a new form.

This Saturday, December 7th, we will have Saturday School in session for 7th and 8th grade as well as students with detentions. Progress Reports for the second quarter will be sent home on Wednesday the 11th with your child(ren). Please make sure to check your child’s book bag. Please email teachers if you wish to have a conference.

The Friends of Thorp and PTA Holiday Tree Extravaganza will be held this Saturday, December 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We will have a number of exciting activities. If your 8th grader is volunteering, please make sure they are dressed appropriately. For more information please visit the Friends of Thorp web site.

I would lke to express a warm welcome to our newest LSC member Mrs. Anu Dewan, who was selected to fill a vacancy on the LSC Council. Thank you to all parents who expressed an interest in filling the position and remember that our general LSC election will be in April. Please call the office for more information.

Important Correction: We will have our Annual Winter Sing-a-long Celebration on Friday, December 20th at 8:15 a.m. for grades K-3 and at 9:15 a.m. for grades 4-8. Please check the website calendar for more details. Parents you will be informed if your child will be singing on stage. Finally, you can follow Thorp’s Twitter Feed on your cellphone. All you have to do is Text: “Follow @ThorpSchool” to 40404 and you will then get a text message any time Thorp Academy sends out a Tweet! If you ever want to cancel, just text Stop, and you’ll no longer receive updates.

With the colder weather, please know that your child can choose to come in for recess and warm up. As a rule of thumb we have outdoor recess for all students unless there is severe winter weather. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately. If you know of anyone in need of winter clothing please email me or call the office.

Thank you.
