Dear Parents,

There WILL BE NO Saturday school for 7th and 8th grade students this Saturday, November 29th. This week is a short one. We will have school on Monday and Tuesday and then we are off for the rest of the week – Have a Happy Thanksgiving !

Friends of Thorp is still looking for crafters and bakers for our Holiday Extravaganza! If you are crafty or know someone who is, then please join us on December 6th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. for our tree sale and craft fair. Space is $25 per crafter or $35 if you need us to supply a table. For more information or to sign up to sell, check out their website at http://www.friendsofthorp.org/holiday_tree_sale/. Bakers, please contact Bindu Alexander at fotevents@gmail.com .

The holidays are upon us! Would you like to help students pick out great gifts for their relatives? The PTA is looking for volunteers to assist students shop for gifts at our Snowman Village Holiday Shop. This year, we will have three days available to choose from, December 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. You can volunteer for part of a day, an entire day, or whatever your schedule allows. If you are available to help, we would love to see you there! Please visit the link below and let us know the day(s) and time(s) you pick, so we are sure to have coverage. Thank you for your support. http://vols.pt/SCnXhz

I would like to personally thank all of our parent volunteers on PTA and Friends of Thorp that help make Thorp Academy the best school in Chicago. If you are interested in volunteering on a regular basis please come to the office for our volunteer packet.

Please fill out a short survey about my performance as your child’s principal. Your feedback is important to our LSC as well as to me personally. The survey will remain open until December 19th at http://tinyurl.com/principalsurvey2015.

For parents who do not have access to an internet-connected computer at home, please let me know. We are working with a number of agencies to help provide our parents acquire the technology necessary for students to complete their school work. If you are thinking about presents for your children this holiday season – consider low-cost Chromebooks. Chromebooks are often less than $200; and your child can use them to complete homework, visit our learning sites, and to work on school projects. We use Chromebooks extensively at school as a low-cost alternative to laptops for our learning programs.

Please help us make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the winter weather. Students have recess when weather permits (20 degrees and above) and are reminded to dress properly for outside recess. Students are always permitted to get their hats, winter coats, scarves and gloves before going outside. We also give students the option to sit inside, if they do not want to have outside recess.

Once again, Thorp Academy, along with a number of community groups will be providing families with meals, gifts and other items during the holiday season. If you are in need, or know of a family in need, we can help. Please let us know by emailing me directly at edtoledo@cps.edu.

Sincerely,

Efren Toledo – Principal
