Friday Letter: 04.25.14

April 25, 2014

Dear Parents,

This week’s Friday Letter contains some very exciting news: We are getting our playground! O.A. Thorp Scholastic Academy has received a grant from Kaboom!, Dr. Pepper/Snapple and CPS to build our K-2 playground on the east play lot.

I am so grateful to work for such wonderfully committed families and staff who have contributed so much time, talent and financial resources to ensure that our students have a safe and fun place to play. Your efforts are noticed and truly appreciated.  We will be asking for your support again soon – our playground Design Day is scheduled for May 6.  Our playground will be built in one day with our corporate sponsor Dr. Pepper/Snapple on August 9th; so save the date and get the power tools ready! Remember this is just Phase One of our Campus Park Plan – but it is a big step.

I would also like to personally thank our parents, teachers, staff, students, business partners, Friends of Thorp, the Thorp PTA, Alderman Timothy Cullerton, Urban Habitat Chicago, and Grace Rappe from CPS and so many others who have worked so hard in helping make this dream a reality.

The second announcement I’d like to make is: Spring is here and our Kitchen Garden team needs your help. We are looking for garden tools.

  • 15 Trowels

  • 15 Small Hand Rakes

  • 15 Pairs of Washable Kid-Sized Garden Gloves

  • Large Plastic Storage Bins

  • Fertilizer

  • 4 Hose Connectors

  • 3 100ft hoses

If you have some of these items already and would like to donate them, please email Mrs. Gomez (rruiz@cps.edu) or Ms. Kupinski (mkupinski@cps.edu) by May 1st.

Finally, we have our MAP testing schedule on-line. Please visit our website to see when your child will be testing. If you are looking for last minute practice on MAP, please check out the NWEA vocabulary practice on our website at http://tinyurl.com/thorpmap .  Remember at Thorp the instructional practices of differentiated instructional groups, active learning and the commitment of our teachers, our parents and our students will ensure that we will do well. We are committed to learning first, these tests just demonstrate what we already know –  At Thorp your child is constantly learning and growing.

Thank you.
